A poster advertising steam hauled excursion trains. Unfortunately all in Japanese Sun 2nd Sep 2007: Japanese Steam Locomotive Museum Kyoto August 2007
Photos taken at the Japanese Steam Locomotive Museum Kyoto August 2007.

Umekoji Roundhouse in Kyoto used to be a major engine depot on the heavily operated Tokaido main line, but now serves as a steam engine museum. With a large steam collection covering almost all classes built just after Japan's modern steam era had begun, the museum offers a good oppotunity to learn about Japanese steam engine heritage.
Reasonably priced at 400Yen (<2.00) for adults an 200yen for children. Plus a supplement for the thrice daily 1Km run.

The museum holds 16 locomotives of which 7 are advertised as steam-able at present.

Thanks to the members of the Japanese railway society from where I sourced the information about the locomotives

Class 185 185113 and on the right the old Cleethorpes station building. Sat 3rd Feb 2007: Cleethorpes Railway Station
Cleethorpes Railway Station opened in 1867.

Now served by trains to Barton on Humber; Lincoln and the Transpeninne Express.

Like most stations serving seaside destinations, it has seen better days.

Hard to believe there used to be a through service to London with Deltic hauled trains and latterly HSTs.

The station used to have 6 platforms - only 3 of which appear usable now.

A few shots in the gathering gloom of late January from Melton Ross, Brokelsby Junction and Ulceby
1 Ulceby station it is here the branch leaves the line to Immingham Sat 27th Jan 2007: The branch line to Barton on Humber
The branch line to Barton on Humber from Ulceby used to be a line to New Holland where the Humber ferry connected the South and North banks of the Humber, with a spur to Barton on Humber. The Humber ferry was withdrawn on 24th June 1981- the day that the Humber bridge was opened. The station on the pier was closed and a new halt opened closer to the town and all trains now run to Barton on Humber

The service on the branch is a 2 hourly one run from Cleethorpes and passenger numbers seem very light. How long this branch will carry on must be open to doubt.

3 class 165 165132 enters Cookham station Sun 13th Aug 2006: Maidenhead to Marlow Branch
Photographs of the Maidenhead to Marlow branch.

This used to be part ofa through line from Maidenhead to Aylesbury via High Wycombe with the Marlow line being a branch from Bourne End.

From 5th May 1969 the Maidenhead - Aylesbury service was withdrawn and the Bourne End to High Wycombe service was considerably reduced. The passing loop at Cookham was removed. The Bourne End to High Wycombe line was closed on 2nd May 1970.
The line now runs from Maidenhead to Marlow via a reversal at Bourne end.

In the rush hour there is a shuttle between Bourne End and Marlow and a service between Maidenhead and Bourne End.

it is therefore possible to see two units at Bourne End. As most people travel to or from Marlow and Midenhead, there is a mad scramble to change trains at Bourne End!!

These photos are the first in a series I am putting together of Branch lines with a representative selection of photos at the stations en-route.

For me the Aylesbury to Princess Risborough Branch has the added advantage of being home to class 121 bubble cars as previously used on the Severn Beach line - see my Bristol in the 1970's collection for a number of shots.
The line also has the advantage of being used by the bin liner trains to Calvert.
West Country class no 34039 Boscastle sits in the frame of the shed at Loughborough Tue 1st Aug 2006: Great Central Railway and The Battlefield Line
In the mid 1970's I was a member of the then Bristol Suburban Railway (BSR) , now the Avon Valley Railway.

The BSR used to run excursions to many different preserved lines.

This gallery contains photos from a very wet trip that combined the Great Central and The Battlefield line in, I would say, 1975 based on the fact that the Duke was in the shed and according to the records left Barry in 1975.

It must have been a fair old journey from Bristol to Loughborough back then.

Painswick Road Signal Box Glos Sun 23rd Apr 2006: Painswick Road Signal Box
Painswick Road Signal Box was put out of use by the changes in Glos railway layout in the mid 70's.

The Bristol Suburban railway Society (now Avon Valley Railway) recovered Painswick Road Signal Box to Bitton. I think it then rotted away as a lot of the people involved in its recovery drifted away. Great shame. there is a photo on my Avon Valley/Bristol Suburban gallery of those involved in the recovery. This photo was left inside the box when we took it over.

3.4 Clifton Down Tunnel 1971/2 Wed 12th Oct 2005: Bristol railways in the 1970s
This collection contains photgraphs from the Bristol area taken in the 1970's.

A number of photos were taken with a kodak brownie camera I was given for christmas in 1966. The rest were taken with a 35 mm camera I was given for christmas in 1971.

The relatively small number of loco based photos reflects the fact that we all thought they would go on for ever!

If you were sent here from the link on the Avon Valley, that collection has been moved to a gallery of its own and is now to be found at:
